This is what hatched from our chrysalides about a week after they formed. Isn't he GORGEOUS? I got these shots about ten minutes after he hatched, before he was able to fly -- later that day he and his matching pals swooped away, never (so far) to be seen again. Ah, butterfly, we hardly knew ye.

These were our babies, the whole reason we planted dill -- they hatched at the beginning of the month and by the 20th the entire dill plant had been eaten and there were chrysalides all over the bare stalks. Awwww, Q-T-PIES!

This is what both loaves looked like in the middle of their third (and supposedly final, post-braiding) rise. They just... SWELLED. After this I separated them, let them finish rising, watched in horror as they turned into enormous dough-monsters, baked one, punched and re-braided the other, and prayed.

The second enormous amorphous blob was punched down furiously, beaten into submission, and re-braided. I left it in the fridge while the other baked, hoping to slow its mostrous rise. Here's hoping it turns out less... lame.

My challah, upon its third rising (the one that was POST-BRAID), decided to grow into a huge, shapeless blob of air and lunacy. I baked one of the loaves that way to see what would happen. Apparently, this is what happens.

So, I meant to make a loaf of brown soda bread as back-up for my (presumedly) inevitable challah failure... except that I somehow neglected to add in the 3 cups of whole-wheat flour the recipe calls for, leaving me with 1 cup of white flour, some buttermilk, some salt, and soda. Uh. It came out looking like a flying saucer and it tasted kind of weird, but we ate it anyway because we are gorillas. In this photo, it is in a miniature loaf pan: awww, sad little "bread."

I love that these are supposed to be dwarf tomatoes. They tower three feet over the box, and there's another 15 inches or so inside the box. WTF, not-so-tiny 'matoes?

The Bonnie Grape tomato plant is really getting out of control -- it already takes up two separate stakes due to its dual vine growth, it's well over three feet tall, and it's vined out enough that I think I'll have to use more stakes. Some "dwarf"!

Here are the marigolds, seen from another side of the box. I popped them between the two tomato plants with the most space between them. It might end up too shady there (like my poor basil is struggling with), but if so I can always tie the tomatoes up more firmly.

Here's my other new baby, portulaca (also called moss rose). It looks desperately droopy here, post-transplant, but it perked up right away and I'll have new pictures soon. This pretty desert-hardy plant blooms in all sorts of bright colors. The flowers shut up tight on cloudy days and and at night, and the blooms appear and disappear fast, so I'm never quite sure what the plant will look like from day to day. I can't wait for it to take over the pot and start fully blooming; I love all the bright colors and tiny, succulent leaves.

One of the new babies I got last Wednesday. These are luscious, big, firework-y marigolds. I love marigolds in a vegetable garden; they help repel pests and attract helpers (like bees and ladybugs), the leaves are deliciously sweet in salads, and you can make a nice calming tea or an astringent wash for cuts from it.

My dill developed its first head! I'm also seeing lots of butterfly eggs -- I pick most of them off (dill worms are a true pest), but I'm leaving some on so that Connor and I can watch the butterfly/egg/caterpillar/chrysalis/butterfly life cycle this summer.

This so-called dwarf tomato plant is sprouting buds, blossoms, and fruit absolutely everywhere. I kind of want to plant another one so that I can be swimming in cherry tomatoes by July.
